Friday Workout Video

Today I want to share one of my favorite exercises for you.

While I think that the standing barbell shoulder press is the king of upper body exercises, this is a pretty good assistance exercise for building strong shoulders and arms.

You think the standing BB press is a good idea for someone like me who played baseball for 20 years and is constantly working against a tendency toward acromion pressure? Lots of face pulls, rows and basic scapular retraction work seem to keep me doing okay.

I have indeed incorporated more overhead pressing into my exercise over the past couple of years, but almost exclusively with DBs because I can keep my hands in a neutral position with palms facing each other. This is the most comfortable.

Aw well, now that I've written it out, I realize that even if the BB press is a better exercise, I'm okay with where I am. To be able to press at all after two decades of baseball is good enough for me! :)

I think the standing shoulder press is a super tough lift. I know of 300+ pound bench pressers, who still can't do 135 for ten on the standing shoulder press.

That's why I like it so much.

Youtube search bench press and you see all sorts of mind blowing lifts.

Youtube search standing shoulder press, and you get nothing even close.

You gotta love the forgotten lifts.

Looking mighty swole there, Brad. I agree on the lack of lifters pressing good weights overhead; the standing press should be about 2/3 of your bench, but I rarely see anyone come close to that.

I agree, the BB press is the king of upper body exercises. If I could only do 2 exercises, I would squat and do this.
